چکیده

[1] Vertically pointing Doppler radar has been used to study the evolution of ice particles as they sediment through a cirrus cloud. The measured Doppler fall speeds, together with radar-derived estimates for the altitude of cloud top, are used to estimate a characteristic fall time tc for the ‘average’ ice particle. The change in radar reflectivity Z is studied as a function of tc, and is found to increase exponentially with fall time. We use the idea of dynamically scaling particle size distributions to show that this behaviour implies exponential growth of the average particle size, and argue that this exponential growth is a signature of ice crystal aggregation. On retrieving the microphysical properties of cirrus clouds using the moments of the millimeterwavelength Doppler spectrum

[1] Techniques that use only measurements provided by millimeter-wavelength Doppler radar for retrieving the properties of clouds provide certain practical advantages over techniques that require measurements from multiple instruments. We concentrate on the capacity of the moments of the Doppler spectrum to provide information suitable for retrieving the microphysical properties of cirrus cloud...

Fingerprints of a riming event on cloud radar Doppler spectra: observations and modeling

Radar Doppler spectra measurements are exploited to study a riming event when precipitating ice from a seeder cloud sediment through a supercooled liquid water (SLW) layer. The focus is on the “golden sample” case study for this type of analysis based on observations collected during the deployment of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program’s (ARM) mobile facility AMF2 at Hyytiälä, Finlan...

Insights into riming and aggregation processes as revealed by aircraft, radar, and disdrometer observations for a 27 April 2011 widespread precipitation event

This study presents aircraft spiral ascent and descent observations intercepting a transition to riming processes during widespread stratiform precipitation. The sequence is documented using collocated scanning and profiling radar, including longer-wavelength dual polarization measurements and shorter-wavelength Doppler spectra. Riming regions are supported using aircraft measurements recording...

Cirrus Microphysical Properties and Air Motion Statistics Using Cloud Radar Doppler Moments. Part I: Algorithm Description

The first three moments of the millimeter-wavelength radar Doppler spectrum provide valuable information regarding both cloud properties and air motion. An algorithm using these Doppler radar moments is developed to retrieve cirrus microphysical properties and the mean air vertical motion and their errors. The observed Doppler spectrum results from the convolution of a quiet-air radar reflectiv...
